BIO |
| Karl and Gene Centeno formed
Gonsemble in 1999 as a way to fuse their musical
influences. "We're all jazz musicians but we
grew up on hip-hop, so we decided to make a band
with a heavy jazz influence but still raw
hip-hop," explains Karl, who plays trumpet and
emcees. "We're all theoretically trained but we
don't just play like that. We're just trying to
do something else with hip-hop." The brothers
were heavily influenced by their father, an
accomplished musician who exposed them to such
legends as Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Lee
Morgan in addition to other musical styles. Gene
was even involved in a heavy-metal band before
moving on to saxophone. After moving to Denton,
several lineup changes, and a brief stint as The
Bridge, Gonsemble has returned to San Antonio
poised to deliver its blend of beats, skills,
and horns. The current incarnation of the band
includes members of Mojoe and Grupo Fantasma,
and will no doubt keep bodies moving late into
the night. Article written by M. Solis (San
Antonio Current). |
